Alaska Tour Days 6-10

The sun was shining (!) on Day 6 June 27 as we hit the road for Teslin Lake.  We spotted 3 black bears (a mom and 2 cubs) and a grizzly bear on the drive but they came up too fast I wasn't able to get a picture.  It was wonderful to drive on such a beautiful day.  The scenery was beautiful.

Beautiful snow capped mountains

At the end of the day the group had a wine and cheese party by a campfire.

The next day we travelled to Whitehorse for a 2 night stay.  I wish I had taken pictures of this campground.  It was very crowded with very narrow sites.  Some RVs were only 4" away from their neighbor!

Here are some pictures from our drive...

We saw many motorcyclists and several bicyclists with full saddlebags

The Mighty Yukon River

While in Whitehorse we had several planned group activities.  Here are some highlights...

We toured the SS Klondike.  The Klondike is a restored and refurnished sternwheeler that pays tribute to an era before roads, when riverboats and rail linked the Yukon to the outside world.

We saw the Whitehorse Fish Ladder, the world's longest wooden fish ladder.  Salmon returning to spawn use this ladder to get past the Whitehorse dam.  Unfortunately the salmon had not yet arrived when we were there.

We stopped at the Miles Canyon Observation above the Miles Canyon.  The canyon was created over 8.5 million years ago as a result of lava flows in the valley.

The color of the water is beautiful!

In the canyon there is a pedestrian cable suspension bridge across the water which connects to Canyon City Archeological Site Walk.  This is a walk to the ruins of a gold rush settlement that was established in 1897.  It had started raining when we arrived at the bridge so we decided to just walk across it.

On Day 9 we travelled to Destruction Bay, population 55, on Kluane Lake.  The name is derived from the wind blowing down structures erected by the military during highway construction in 1942-43. It was a beautiful sunny day with cool temperatures.

Oh-oh!

In the evening we all enjoyed a BBQ dinner and show at the campground.

Day 10, July 1, found us on the road to Beaver Creek, our last stop in Yukon Territory.

On the drive...

July 1 is Canada Day (like our 4th of July) and everyone in town was invited to eat, dance, and celebrate.  Dinner was a pig roast and lots of sides with dessert too!  Live music was provided by The Lack Family and they were absolutely wonderful!  John and I danced until we dropped!

Happy 150th Birthday, Canada!

What a wonderful time we've had so far!  We look forward to the next 40 days!
