Cannon Beach, Oregon

On August 20 we left Port Angeles for Cannon Beach.  A few miles out of town we heard a loud pop which turned out to be a blown tire.  Fortunately we found a wide spot on the side of the road where we could pull out of traffic.  A state police officer stopped to see if we needed help then he stayed with us until we received confirmation from Good Sam that help was on its way.  We were back on the road in 3 hours.

It was smoky and hazy for most of our drive

Cannon Beach is a popular tourist destination.  It is recognized by its well-known landmark, Haystack Rock.  This igneous rock has an elevation of 235 feet and is often accessible at low tide.  Cannon Beach and nearby Ecola State Park have appeared in several films including: The Goonies, Twilight, Hysterical, and Point Break.  The town is a charming seaside town with weathered buildings, beautiful gardens, and plenty of shops and restaurants.  To help maintain the small town feel chain stores such as Safeway and McDonalds have been discouraged from building there.  There is one small market in town which has basic necessities.  Our campground was 2 1/2 blocks from the beach and town and even though we had noisy neighbors for some of our stay, we enjoyed walking everyday to the beach and through town.

We hit the beach our first full day in town.

We went to the beach on two evenings to catch the sunset.  The first evening was partly cloudy...

On the second night we had more luck...

Goodbye Cannon Beach.  On August 27 we hit the road and start heading east to Boise, Idaho...
