On to Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The drive from Belfast, ME to Cape Cod, MA was longer than we normally drive so we stopped overnight in Beach Rose RV Park in Salisbury, MA.  It was a very crowded campground but it was ok for a one night stopover.

The trees on the drive were at peak  color.  I think we're chasing the leaf changing to the south as we make our way to Baltimore.  Pictures don't really show how beautiful the leaves are now.

On the way we drove under highway overpasses that had several flags on them.  That's a nice way to have roadway memorials.

We finally arrived at Atlantic Oaks Campground in Eastham, MA on Cape Cod.  It's off-season now so only about 12 sites out of 75 are occupied.  That should make it very quiet!

The day after arriving we went on a long bike ride on the Cape Cod Rail Trail.  This trail is a 22-mile paved rail trail.  It connects to the 6 mile Old Colony Rail Trail and 8 miles of trails in Nickerson State Park.  There is also the Nauset Bike Trail which leads to Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod National Seashore.  We plan on riding a portion of each trail.

The Cape Cod Rail Trail...

The portion of the Cape Cod trail that we rode on led to the beach.  We parked our bikes and walked on the beach for a while.

We had the beach to ourselves.

I love waves.  Listen to the waves...

When we were walking on the beach we saw a seal about 30 yards from shore.  There was a sign posted on the beach warning swimmers to beware of seals, sharks, and jellyfish.

We're expecting storms during the next 24-36 hours with rain and wind up to 50 mph.  Once the storm passes, we'll get back to exploring Cape Cod.

Goodbye Belfast!

We're going miss Belfast with its harbor, pedestrian bridge, and bike path.  I will especially miss watching the tide roll in and out.  I was so taken with the tides that I could sit and watch and listen to the water all day.

At low tide there was plenty of beach to walk on and look for interesting rock formations...

Low tide behind the RV

At high tide there was no room to walk up the beach.  We couldn't even walk out far enough to get a picture of our RV...

The tide is coming in but there's still room to walk on the beach

Oh-oh! No place to walk now!
Water all the way up to the cliff behind our RV

Funny mailboxes on the road to town

On Saturday, October 21 we head for 10 days at Cape Cod, Massachusetts with a one-night stopover in Salisbury, MA.

Exploring Maine Coastal Towns

We spent a day driving south of Belfast to visit Maine coastal towns.  On the way we stopped at Lincolnville Beach.  Lincolnville is a small coastal town of about 2,100 with a tiny beach and an inn.

We continued our drive south and came to Mount Battie auto road in Camden Hills State Park.  The summit provided scenic views of Penobscot Bay and Camden.  The valley below was shades of red and gold.

On the way up...

Camden, Maine is a small coastal town of about 5,000.  The population more than triples during the summer months, due to tourists and summer residents.  It's downtown area draws tourists with its shops, restaurants, art galleries, and of course, the harbor for sailing.

Maine--where the mountains meet the sea

After spending some time walking around Camden we continued down the road to Rockland.  Rockland has a population of 7,300.  It too has a small downtown with old brick buildings but we were focused on finding a place for lunch so we didn't get any pictures of the town.  We did find a great little diner for lunch.

After lunch it was time to drive back to Belfast.
